The
Gamma Knife is unique for its strategic delivery of radiation to
specific targets in the brain. Radiation from cobalt-60 sources
is delivered through the 201 ports in a collimator helmet to specific
targets in the brain. Because each beam consists of low-dose radiation,
the gamma rays have little or no effect on healthy surrounding tissue.
Yet, the beams intersect at the target to arrest and, over time,
destroy target lesions and abnormalities. Gamma Knife's preciseness
means that the prescribed dosage can be delivered in just one treatment.
